The London-based Iraqi artist Dia Azzawi has donated a serious work to a charity public sale elevating funds for displaced households in Beirut and southern Lebanon. ‘Maintain Beirut’, organised by the artwork consultancy Artse, contains works by 30 artists from the Arab world and runs from 28-31 July on the web market Artscoops. The entire proceeds might be donated to the Lebanese Purple Cross and the Beirut-based non-profit Beit El Baraka to help their emergency humanitarian response to the present disaster in Lebanon.

Since 2 March, hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel have escalated, resulting in army strikes and Israel’s floor invasion in southern Lebanon, killing a whole lot of individuals and leaving a couple of million individuals displaced, in line with the United Nations’ Worldwide Organisation for Migration. “Lebanon goes by way of one other deeply painful interval, with households displaced from Beirut and the South and many individuals are left with out secure shelter or certainty about what comes subsequent,” says Cynthia Khoury, the founding father of Artse. “As we speak many households have begun returning to the South, however they’re returning to broken villages, to properties and livelihoods that may take years to rebuild.”

The public sale brings collectively donated works by artists from Lebanon, Iraq, Tunisia, Palestine, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Syria, together with Taher Jaoui, Charles Khoury and Katya Traboulsi. Estimates for the works vary from $150 to $30,000, with the public sale anticipated to boost between $100,000 to $160,000 in complete.

Khoury personally reached out to every of the taking part artists. Azzawi, who she first met at an version of Artwork Dubai, is without doubt one of the most necessary figures in trendy Arab artwork, and a favorite artist of Khoury’s. He has donated a woodcut on paper titled Pursuit from Afar (2018-19), which “unfolds throughout three panels, its fragmented figures carrying a way of pressure, distance, and collective wrestle”, in line with an Instagram put up by Artse. The work is estimated to attain between $25,000 to $30,000. “[Azzawi’s] presence on this public sale means one thing past the estimate,” Khoury says. “Displacement has been on the centre of his work for half a century, from [the 1982 Beirut massacre] Sabra and Shatila onward, so a piece of his in an public sale for displaced households in Lebanon appears like a continuation of what his artwork has at all times stood for.”
