Indigenous Alaskan artist Nicholas Galanin receives $200,000 prize from Crystal Bridges Museum

The multidisciplinary artist and musician Nicholas Galanin (Tlingit-Unangax̂), a member of the Sitka Tribe of Alaska, has received the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Artwork’s Don Tyson Prize, a $200,000 biennial award given for achievement within the discipline of American artwork.

The prize, first awarded in 2016, celebrates people or organisations that “change the way in which we take a look at, take into consideration or expertise” American artwork. The Tyson household endowed the museum’s Students of American Artwork programme and Don Tyson’s son, John H. Tyson, was a founding Crystal Bridges board member.
