Philadelphia museum returns 16th-century manuscript to Peru

The Rosenbach Museum and Library in Philadelphia has voluntarily returned a Sixteenth-century manuscript to the federal government of Peru, following a federal investigation into the provenance of the item. The manuscript, which dates to 1599 and paperwork the formation of the primary theatre troupe within the Americas, was initially bought by museum founder Abraham Simon Wolf Rosenbach (1876-1952) within the Nineteen Twenties throughout a go to to Peru.

Federal investigators started researching the background of the manuscript in 2017 after a request from the Peruvian authorities, finally tying the Rosenbach’s pages to a bigger sure quantity of texts. The museum’s web site describes Rosenbach as a “US businessman who was a recognized collector of Peruvian colonial treasures, together with work, manuscripts, books and different artefacts”.
